In April 2011, EAI marked its 40th anniversary with a special public art project for New York's Times Square: EAI in Times Square: 40 Years of Video Art. In partnership with the Times Square Alliance and MTV, EAI brought a selection of short, silent video pieces by artists to the heart of Times Square. EAI presented artists' creative media interventions on a spectacular scale: works by Vito Acconci, Dan Asher, Phyllis Baldino, Dara Birnbaum, Gary Hill, Shigeko Kubota, Takeshi Murata, Nam June Paik, Martha Rosler, Stuart Sherman and William Wegman were shown daily on MTV 44½'s large-format LED screen, in one of the world's most dynamic media landscapes.

Baldino's 1993 piece Suitcase/Not Suitcase, from her "Gray Area" Series, was selected for the Times Square project. At one of the nighttime screenings, Baldino created a brief performance under the MTV screen in Times Square. As her piece played on the enormous LED screen above her, she reenacted the performance actions, live, on the street below.

Thanks: EAI, Betsy Reid, Thomas Boettcher.
