The New Television: Video After Television

To document the landmark event Open Circuits: An International Conference on the Future of Television, Douglas Davis and Allison Simmons edited a foundational, yet understudied anthology titled The New Television: A Public/Private Art (1977), comprised of texts presented at and responding to the conference. While it has long been out of print, EAI and no place press are thrilled to bring this essential book back into circulation. Our forthcoming two-part publication, The New Television: Video After Television, pairs newly commissioned essays with a facsimile print of the original anthology, reexamining the pivotal conference and exploring its enduring relevance to today’s artistic and critical practices.

New scholarly texts by over a dozen writers including Ed Halter, Kris Paulsen, Fred Turner, and EAI Director Emerita Lori Zippay, roundtables moderated by Ina Blom and Michelle Kuo, and previously unpublished archival documents illuminate the institutional histories of video art, consider global televisual contexts and alternative critical approaches, and examine contemporary video art and its continued relevance from new perspectives.

The New Television: Video After Television is made possible through the generous support of the Carl & Marilynn Thoma Foundation. Order the book here.
