Electronic Arts Intermix (EAI) is pleased to announce the distribution of the video and cable access work of Tony Conrad. To launch this distribution, EAI will present a screening and discussion of Conrad’s television projects at Printed Matter’s 2019 New York Art Book Fair, held at MoMA PS1. Free admission!
Spanning six decades, Tony Conrad’s prodigious career roamed across a boundless array of disciplines and roles, including visual artist, filmmaker, violinist, composer, cable access activist, and professor. He made major contributions in the emergent fields of minimal music composition and structural film in the 1960s, and then carried his pioneering work into the realm of rock and drone music, video and performance art, and cable access television. Influencing the development of multiple artistic movements as both a collaborator and outside agitator, Conrad evaded any singular classification, and yet had a profound influence on his contemporaries and subsequent generations.
At Printed Matter’s New York Art Book Fair, EAI will present Tony Conrad: Knowing with Television, to be followed by a conversation with some of Conrad’s friends and associates. This event inaugurates the distribution of Conrad’s video work, including Authorized to Surrender, a four-program anthology of single-channel video from 1977 to 1990, and Coming Attractions, his audacious feature-length memory-film starring Francis Francine (of Flaming Creatures), made in collaboration with Beverly Grant and featuring a musical score from Terry Riley, John Cale, Charlemagne Palestine, and more.
