Haste Makes Waste

Haste Makes Waste

John Baldessari
1973, 4 min, b&w, silent

Description

In this droll exercise, Baldessari repeatedly types the title phrase on a piece of paper. His deliberate action doesn't 'waste' his movements or time, and produces a perfect column of text. This apparently pointless goal raises questions about the status of the work of art: wasted labor or valuable commodity?
