Staged before an intimate audience on the set of Richard Foreman's play Pandering to the Masses: A Misrepresentation (Sherman was in the cast), Sherman's first Spectacle introduces his unique approach to performance. With fluid and seemingly practiced motions he interacts with costumes, furniture, Foreman's stage design, and the audience members to create a series of droll vignettes. In one overt deconstruction of theatrical choreography, Sherman throws an umbrella and rain slicker to the floor, and deadpans the exuberant theme from Singing in the Rain while standing rigidly in place.
